Professor Frederick C Leung BA., PhD.

One of the Founders, Professor Frederick C Leung is an internationally renowned Molecular Biotechnologist, elected in 2009 as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow based on his significant scientific achievements, and contribution and advancement of scientific knowledge.  His passion lies in DNA sequencing research technology development and in applying DNA sequencing to address many important and critical research questions and projects.   As of 1st Janurary, 2014, Prof. Leung has published 184 peer reviewed ISI journal articles, comprising of comparative bacterial genomics, evolutionary biology, metagenomics, virology, biofuel and animal endocrinology. He contributed 82501 nucleotide sequences deposited in GenBank.

Professor Leung’s research team was among the first three international groups that completely sequenced the SARS CoV genome and demonstrated that bats were the natural reservoir that gave rise to the genotype which successfully crossed over to humans and caused the outbreak in 2003. Thirty years ago, his research teams was among the first to clone and to express bovine growth hormone using mammalian cells and now his research team is at the forefront of applying Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) platform technology to do full/complete (no gaps) viral and bacterial genome sequencing to further the understanding of viral and bacterial genome evolution.  More recently, he has been developing a research interest in applying NGS (metagenomic) platform technology in “Waste to Energy” as well as “Gut Microbioime”.

Professor Leung is convinced that there is a strong demand for NGS DNA sequencing and analysis services (bioinformatics) since DNA sequencing and bioinformatics are indispensable to the biotechnology R&D industry as well as academic researchers. FCL Bioscience was formed based on Professor Leung’s interest in providing his personal expertise in NGS DNA sequencing and analysis services to promote genomics research in Hong Kong and the region.
